Sweden is building the world’s first permanent electrified road for EVs to charge while driving. The first of its kind in the world, the e-motorway may lead to an expansion of a further 3,000 km of electric roads in Sweden by 2035.

The electrified road, a Swedish innovation, is the first of its kind in the world and allows both commercial and passenger vehicles to be recharged while driving. The track stretches along two kilometers (1.2 miles) and has been installed on public road “893” just 30 minutes outside of Stockholm.

What is the EV goal in Sweden?

The Swedish government has set a target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2045. This will require 2.5 million EVs and PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) by the end of the next decade.

Which country is leading in EV technology?

Norway

EVs as share of passenger vehicle sales

Notes: EVs include all-electric vehicles, not plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Norway is the world leader on EVs, growing sales from less than 1% to 80% in 12 years.

Why is Sweden so big on the map?
Due to how the Mercator projection works, the more north or south a landmass is, the more deceptively large it appears. The result: A lot of places — like Russia, Alaska, and even all of Europe — appear to be way larger than they are in reality.
